Beside the friary of San Fortunato in Todi is a unique structure, originally built in the Roman period as a water cistern. According to local legend it was used to imprison Cassiano, a 3rd-century bishop of Todi, prior to his martyrdom. Although it was converted into a chapel, probably in the 12th century (when the doorway, windows and outer brick facing were added), it has been popularly known as the Carcere di San Cassiano (‘Prison of St Cassiano’) for centuries. The story of bishop Cassiano is, however, one of the ‘grey areas’ of Todi’s history and the legend of his imprisonment in the cistern is even more uncertain. Apparently, the first record of this event comes to light at the end of the 16th century, precisely when Bishop Angelo Cesi was attempting to ‘cancel’ the final ten years of Jacopone’s life (including his imprisonment). Is it possible that the story of Cassiano’s imprisonment was actually invented at that time to distract from and cover up the fact of Jacopone’s imprisonment in this structure? We may never know; there is no evidence to prove that Jacopone was imprisoned here but it must remain one of the many intriguing possibilities surrounding the story of Jacopone.

Getting to know the real Jacopone - The Great Dispute: Jacopone and Boniface VIII - Jacopone and Boniface
One intriguing angle on the clash between Jacopone and Pope Boniface is the possibility that it was personal. There are suggestions of a long-standing animosity between the two men, going back to their youth. Certainly, Boniface had strong connections with Todi as a young man. Born c.1230 as Benedetto Caetani, into a noble Roman family, he was almost exactly the same age as Jacopone. When his uncle, Pietro Caetani, became Bishop of Todi in 1252, young Benedetto followed him there. He even studied law in Todi and was made a canon in the Cathedral of Todi by his uncle in 1260. Benedetto began a career as an official and diplomat at the Papal court in 1264, but kept close contact with Todi, even after becoming Pope in 1295. So it is quite possible that Benedetto and Jacopone knew each other, as educated young men in Todi in the 1250s and 1260s. There is no definite evidence for this – and there is certainly no evidence for any youthful conflict between them; this must remain a fascinating but unproven speculation. During these years, however, Jacopone may have formed an opinion about Benedetto and his character that would, in later years, influence his reaction to Boniface as Pope.

Stabat Mater - Introducing the Stabat Mater - What is the Stabat Mater?
One of medieval Europe’s most popular religious hymns, the Stabat Mater is a meditation on how Mary felt as she stood beside the cross watching her Son die. More than this, it’s intended as an entering into the sufferings of Jesus and Mary, in the hope that this will lead us to greater love for Jesus. It was widely used over seven centuries in Catholic liturgies, as well as in informal popular devotions and for private prayer. Since the reforms of Vatican II in the 1960s the Stabat Mater, as a Latin hymn, is less frequently used in formal liturgical settings. But it remains popular in private devotions and, above all, as a musical piece: see this recent discussion of new musical settings and of how the Stabat Mater still resonates today. Stabat Mater - Introducing the Stabat Mater - Stabat Mater at the Iubel Festival 2019
Gioacchino Rossini's Stabat Mater was performed for the first Iubel Festival. Maestro Ezio Bosso conducted the European Philharmonic Orchestra (with members from all over Europe), the Rossini Philharmonic Choir of Pesaro and the young soloists of the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation (Floriana Cicio, Isabel Lombana Mariño, Rino Matafù and Andrea Pellegrini). About a thousand people filled the Church of San Fortunato, where Jacopone is buried - an evocative and symbolic choice for the event.

... as his tomb is obscured and unknown to most of his fellow citizens and visitors, so is his literary and religious personality. Friar Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306) was and continues to be an awkward character! The excommunication by … Boniface VIII continues in its deleterious effect. No one to date has managed to produce an autograph of his or anything else that had belonged to him… The ‘Canticle of friar Jacopone on his imprisonment’ [laude LV] and the three ‘Epistles’ to Pope Boniface VIII [laudi LVI-LVIII] clearly reveal the cruel and long segregation of Jacopone, who disappears from the scene as a religious and as a man. It is useless today to look for his house, his original writings and whatever else belonged to him ... Against this background, the lack of direct evidence for Jacopone’s authorship of the Stabat Mater is hardly surprising and may, paradoxically, argue in favour of him. The monument to Jacopone in San Fortunato gives the date of his death as 1296, at the time of his conflict with Pope Boniface VIII but a full ten years before his actual death. Effectively, this is an attempt to write out of history the last ten years of Jacopone's life.
